Living Tree

Tall Timbers, Spring 2019

Living Tree is a timber pavilion using living trees as structural elements by weaving them together to turn them into one organism that would transfer loads to the ground as it grows. Based on the study of the German team Baubotanik, the project speculates on the life cycle of timber, showing its structural potential in many forms while developing rigorous details to bring realistic solutions.

The tree facade will gradually turn into a single organism and start to transfer the load of CLT floor slabs through the adjustable side joints. Over the years, the majority of columns will be removed, and the tower will be carried by the living facade. The interior of the tower will always be changing with seasons, growing plants, removed coloumns and planters.
